Australian tradie licence requirements by state and territory
In Australia, licensing for trades is regulated at the state and territory level, not federally. That means a licence issued in one state does not automatically authorise work in another, and the same trade may carry different licensing requirements depending on which side of the border the job is on. This guide covers the key trades in each jurisdiction and links directly to each regulator’s public licence search.
New South Wales (NSW)
The primary regulator is NSW Fair Trading. Licensed trades include: building and construction (Contractor Licence); electrical (Qualified Supervisor Certificate + Contractor Licence); plumbing and draining (Qualified Supervisor Certificate + Contractor Licence); refrigeration and air-conditioning; gas fitting; swimming pool and spa construction; waterproofing; and strata managing agents. Use the NSW licence lookup to confirm a licence number before engaging any contractor.
Victoria (VIC)
The primary regulator is the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). Domestic building work (any work over $10,000 or structural) requires a registered building practitioner. Plumbing, gas fitting, draining, roofing and fire protection also require specific VBA registration. Electrical work requires an Electrical Contractor Licence from Energy Safe Victoria. Use the VBA register search to check building practitioners.
Queensland (QLD)
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licenses builders, plumbers, drainers, gas fitters, electricians, painters, tilers, glaziers, plasterers, pest management operators and more. The QBCC also runs the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme for domestic building work. Electrical contractor licences are issued by the QBCC in partnership with Electrical Safety Queensland. Use the QBCC licence search to verify any Queensland trade contractor.
Western Australia (WA)
The WA Building Commission registers and licences contractors across building, plumbing, gas fitting and electrical work. The EnergySafety division handles electrical contractor licensing. For home building work over $20,000, a registered builder must provide Home Indemnity Insurance (HII). Use the WA register search.
South Australia (SA)
Consumer and Business Services (CBS South Australia) licenses building work contractors, plumbers and drainers. ESCOSA oversees gas fitting, and the Technical Regulator handles electrical contractor registration. For building work over $12,000, a licensed building work contractor must be engaged. Use the CBS licence search to verify contractor numbers.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
ACT tradespeople and contractors are regulated by Access Canberra. Building, plumbing, drainage, gas fitting, electrical and refrigeration and air-conditioning contractors all require licences. The ACT also issues occupancy certificates for completed building work. Use the Access Canberra licence search to verify any contractor in the ACT.
Tasmania (TAS)
Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) licenses builders, plumbers, electrical contractors, gas fitters and other regulated occupations in Tasmania. Use the CBOS register search to check any licence number. For electrical work, a licensed electrician must carry out all installations, alterations and repairs to fixed wiring.
Northern Territory (NT)
NT WorkSafe licences plumbers, drainers, gas fitters and other high-risk occupations in the NT. Building contractors undertaking work over $12,000 must hold a building contractor licence from the NT Government. Electrical contractor registration is also required for any electrical work. Use NT WorkSafe’s online register to verify a licence.
When a licence doesn’t transfer between states
Many tradespeople hold licences in one state and occasionally work in others. Under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992, a person licensed to carry out an occupation in one Australian state or territory is entitled to be registered in another — but they must apply for mutual recognition before undertaking work in the new jurisdiction. If a tradie from interstate is working on your home, ask them to confirm they hold a valid licence for the state where the work is being performed.
